Pet owners spend an immense amount of love, time and expense attempting to keep their pets healthy. This consists of your veterinarian’s suggestion of appropriate medications, diet, exercise and healthy environment. When this approach fails and problems reoccur either intermittently or continuously it maybe the food your pet is consuming. Pet food manufactures are not required to list any preservatives or chemicals they themselves have not added or chemicals that register below the government ratio. This means these additives are not listed on the pet food labels in the store.
Ethoxyquin, a preservative originally approved by the FDA for use as a grain preservative to feed animals intended to be killed for food. The FDA has received consumer complaints in the use of Ethoxyquin in pet food due to recognized long term health problems and the effects on the liver. Other preservatives like BHA (Butylated hydroxyanisol) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are added to food to preserve fats. BHA & BHT have been known to cause cancer in humans. These are just a few chemicals listed that can potentially cause your pet harm. There are many more ingredients and additives that are unsafe especially with long term ingestion.
Note: The FDA - CVM - Has removed the prior itemized list of additives and list of pet food ingredients ex: Meat meal; which was much more read friendly. Now it is more difficult to find information on this subject and contacting via telephone, I was referred to different people however; none were able to answer my questions and some I left messages with no response. Very distressing. Get the feeling they don't want us to know. Searching their sites I found the link below.
The stabilizers, preservatives, and other additives in these foods can be toxic. Many other chemicals are added to pet food to improve appearance, characteristics, stability, and taste to make it more appetizing to your pet. These chemicals over time with continued consumption will cause serious health problems for your pet and can potentially result in death. These chemical additives provide no nutritional value. http://bit.ly/1oVH5Us
